あまりにポピューラーすぎて、
ファンじゃない私でも知っているマイケル・ジャクソン【Michael Jackson】

私の記憶は妹のジャネット・ジャクソン【Janet Jackson】がPVに出てた
95年の“Scream”まで。映像と曲のバランスだと、これが一番好きだった。

2009年に“THIS IS IT”が公開され、
多分これは“映画館で観ておいた方がイイ、と思いつつ
1回目の限定公開を逃す。

横浜での撮影の仕事終わりに最終週平日、最終回に間に合う！と知ったものの
観たら最終電車に間に合わない！という葛藤。

結局観ずに帰ったその数ヶ月後の年末年始に再公開。
品川の劇場で観た。

ドキュメンタリーなので割とだらだらとしてて、途中なかだるみした事も事実だけど、
それ以上にマイケルの音楽への熱意と、確固たる音への探求ぶりがすごい。
と言うより、彼のこんな一面はこの映画を見るまで知らなかった。

1曲1曲の出だしのタイミング、テンポ、振り付け、キー設定
まるでオーケストラの指揮者のようにリクエストを出していく。
マイケルもすごいが、同じ舞台に立つパフォーマー達は
ものすごい技術を要求された人達の集まりなんだと、改めて知る。

そしてその“THIS IS IT”で初めって知って好きになった歌が“Earth Song”
“Scream”と同年にリリースされたのに、今まで全く知らなかった。

タイトル通りの環境破壊について歌った曲。
そのサビのパート。

マイケルが人間の行いの数々を問いかけ、
コーラスの女性達がヒトを代弁するかのごとく
“What about us”　【それより私達の事は?】　と答える。

　　『そしたら私達はどうなるの?』と言う解釈もあるけれど、
　　個人的にはそれ以上の傲慢さがヒトにはあり、
　　『それより』と言う意があるように思う。

それでも問いかけるマイケルに、更にヒトの無責任さが生まれ始める
“What about it”　【そんなの構ってられない!】

動物はと問われ、

大地はと問われ、
What about baby boy (What about it)
赤ちゃんはと問われ、それがどうした、と言ってしまうヒト。
What about Abraham (What was us)
そして変わり果てた末、私達は一体どんなだったの? と今を見失う。

最初のこ曲を聴いた時 “What about us” が
“What about earth” にも聞こえた。

たくさんいるヒトの中には、ちゃんと“地球”のことを考えているヒトもいるのに
それが自分しか考えないその他大勢にかき消されて聞こえない。
だから最後に “What was earth” 地球の元ある姿が
分からないぐらいになってしまったと嘆いている。
でもそういいう人タチがいるなら、まだなんとかなるのかも。

勝手な想像ですが、そういう風に想いをはせらせるような曲を作ったマイケルは
やっぱり音楽の天才だったのかなと。

映画では“Earth Song”のように社会的な曲ばかりではなく、
楽しい曲もたくさんある。

ファンではなくても、マイケル・ジャクソンの歌を1曲でも知っていて、
そしていくつか好きな曲があるのなら、
この映画で彼の音楽への情熱を知るのもいいと、そう思う。
